Originally they were bred for herding sheep and cattle. Corgis are very active dogs and they are very intelligent.

There are two distinct breeds: the Cardigan Corgi and the Pembroke Corgi. Beginning in 1934 they were recognized as separate breeds. The Cardigan is larger than the Pembroke. It has larger rounded ears and a foxy, flowing tail. The Pembroke has rounded, pointed ears and is somewhat smaller. The tails of Pembrokes are traditionally docked to a flat-lying stub. That way they look tailless. Both breeds come in a variety of colors, but there are some small differences between the breeds.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom always keeps four Pembroke Corgis at all times. She made the Corgi popular.
